Make a Bat Magnet
Make a Bat Magnet
Stick up for your friend the bat. Make a bat magnet!
(P.S. This activity involves using the stove, so tell your mom or dad that you need help with this.)
You'll need these materials:
What to do:
Step One Mix 1 cup cornstarch, 2 cups baking soda, and 1 1/4 cups cold water in a medium-sized saucepan.
Step Two Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Cook for about 10 minutes or until the mixture is the consistency of mashed potatoes.
Step Three Remove from heat, turn out onto a plate, and cover with a damp cloth.
Step Four After dough cools, knead it gently into a smooth ball. Store in tightly sealed plastic bag and refrigerate until ready to use.
Step Five Flatten dough into a golf ball-sized lump on a piece of wax paper until it is about 1/4 inch thick.
Step Six Using the cookie cutter, cut out the dough into the shape of a bat.
Step Seven Make eyes, nose, ears or other features by adding tiny bits of dough or by carving them into the dough with a pencil.
Step Eight Let dry overnight.
Step Nine Carefully remove the bat mold from the wax paper and paint it or color with markers. Let it dry.
Step Ten Once the bat is dry put a protective coating of clear nail polish or acrylic sealer on with the paintbrush.
Step Eleven Glue a few small magnets to the back and stick your bat magnet where everyone can see!
