Holiday Hints
You might want to buy and decorate a candy box for your chocolate hearts. If you check out the box section of a craft store, you'll find white glossy boxes that you can decorate with stencils, paint, rub-on transfers, and so on. I found a box that resembles a cigar box that would be the perfect size for storing candies. You could also use a plastic box and decorate it with painted wooden shapes, foam shapes, or strips of fabric and specialty buttons arranged in a pattern on the lid.
- 1-pound bag brown melting chocolate (This can be found in blocks or discs in supermarkets or craft stores.)
- 1-pound bag white melting chocolate
- 1/2 pound pink melting chocolate
- 1/4 pound green melting chocolate
Equipment:
- Double boiler (or two pans that fit inside each other)
- Heart-shaped candy molds
- Two sandwich bags
- Scissors
Place about 1 inch of water in the bottom of the double boiler and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Put the brown chocolate in the top pan of the double boiler and place it on top of the bottom pan.
Lower the heat to medium low and cook the chocolate until melted. Once the chocolate begins to bubble, it's ready to pour. Don't overcook the chocolate or it will scorch and taste burnt.
Pour the chocolate into the heart molds. Allow these to harden, and then place them in the refrigerator for two hours before removing the chocolate from the molds. Carefully push the chocolate from the molds, applying pressure to the back of them.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 using the white chocolate.
-
Melt the pink chocolate and place it in a sandwich bag. Squeeze the chocolate to one corner and cut a small hole in this corner. Squeeze the pink chocolate into a flower or heart shape on top of each of the chocolate hearts and allow it to harden.
Melt the green chocolate and place it in a sandwich bag with a small hole cut in one corner. Squeeze the green chocolate onto the hearts with flowers to form leaves. You might want to make a green arrow on the pink heart shapes.
Allow the candies to harden in the refrigerator overnight before packing them into a container.
