Bedding Plants
Here's a "business idea" for your kids: make bedding plants for sale to the neighbors.
Bedding Plants
Materials
- Potting soil mix
- Milk cartons
- Used pony packs or small containers
- Plastic wrap
- Assorted seedsparsley, tomatoes, cabbage, chives, marigolds, zinnias, asters, sunflowers, squash, poppies
- During the winter, buy seeds to start inside.
- With scissors, cut off one side of a milk carton and staple the opening.
- Fill halfway with potting soil and lightly sprinkle with water to dampen.
- Sow seeds, one kind per carton, according to the directions on the packet.
- Label the carton or staple the seed packet to one end.
- Cover with plastic wrap and place in a dark, dry place until seeds germinate.
- Remove wrap and place in a sunny spot, watering often.
- When seedlings are 2 or 3 inches high, transplant 6-8 into smaller plastic containers.
In a few weeks they will be ready for sale. Let your neighbors know that you have bedding plants for sale and watch them disappear!
Note: Find a good gardening book and check for climate and soil suitability when selecting seeds.
