Texture Casts
Discover the different surface textures of a variety of household objects.
Texture Casts
Materials
- Modeling clay or play dough
- Shoe box
Directions
Work the clay or play dough into several smooth, flat shapes like pancakes. Now go around the house and make imprints of different surface textures. Press the clay or play dough into the surface and then peel it off to see the imprint. You may want to walk around with your child to make sure the surface he is taking an imprint of will not be damaged by the dough. Save the imprints and play a guessing game. Look at all the imprints and try to identify the surfaces: a sole of tennis shoe, a floor mat, an outside wall, or a tennis racquet. This game is fun to play with kids or adults who were not around when the imprints were made.
