Baby names come and go. To mark the annual upticks and downturns, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) compiles a list of the most popular names in your state—and the other 49 too! Whether you’re looking for boy names, girl names, or gender-neutral name picks, the 2023 list is filled with new names, old faves, and the other top baby names of the year. 

The Most Popular Baby Names are Regional Winners 

Before you dig deep into this year’s most popular baby names, keep in mind that the number one picks are regional. Liam and Olivia were the overall victors nationally, some states preferred different name options. While many of the SSA national top 10 may include the same baby boy names or baby girls' names, there are some surprising winners!

As you can see from the Social Security Administration data, some names are much more popular than others. The baby names Liam, Oliver, and Olivia were big hits almost everywhere. William and Henry were popular boy names in the South, according to the SSA. Evelyn wasn’t a top winner everywhere. But this girl's name was a notable choice in the Western part of the country.
