Project: Pressed Flower or Herb Ornament

Crafty Clues

Don't be afraid to improvise with you flower materials. Take flowers apart and use indivudul pieces; mix different foliage and flowers together.

Level: Medium

Age: 6 and up

Materials needed: Two microscope slides, clear-drying craft glue, 1/8-inchwide grosgrain or satin ribbon, dried flowers (you'll want tiny blossoms for this project, so herbs like thyme, sage, lavender, and marjoram work especially well)

Directions:

  1. Arrange dried pressed plant materials on one slide and secure with tiny droplets of glue applied with the point of a pin.

  2. When dry, cover with the other slide and secure at the corners with glue droplets. Press until dry.

  3. Using ribbon in a color that blends well with the flowers and foliage, make a one-inch loop and glue it to the very edge at the center top of the slide.

  4. When the loop is dry, make a border with the ribbon, covering the glass edges, and leaving four or five extra inches at each end for a final bow. Beginning at the top center, glue the ribbon in place.

  5. When dry, tie the ends in a bow around the hanging loop and trim.

(This idea is from Herbal Treasures: Inspiring Month-By-Month Projects For Gardening, Cooking, and Crafts by Phyllis V. Shaudys.

You might also try using metallic tape in silver, gold, or copper tones to secure the two slides together. Ask your local crafts supplier. You might want to use some thin metallic cord for the hanger in this version.
