A son of a prince in the state of Lu was called Meng Sun, while a duke of the state of Wei had a ‘style name’ of Meng Zhi. Descendants of both adopted the Meng portion of their names as their surname.
- Chinese : two sources of this surname are a General Men of the Qin Dynasty (221–206 bc) and a place named Mengshuang in Hebei province. Additionally, the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368 ad) was under the rule of Mongolia, known in Chinese as Menggu. Menggu became a surname, which in later times was generally shortened to Meng.
