Your long-range plan needs a long, hard look. How can your teen get to the correct destination without knowing where it is? Spend some time looking ahead with your child, and setting some goals and measures.
You're halfway there. You've got an eye on the future, but may not refresh your outlook all that often. Perhaps you don't keep written records to map out your child's route to the future. Start keeping track of milestones.
Plan to reward yourselves for a job well done! You and your child both know where he's heading, and it won't be the result of chance. Take a look at the distance you've already traversed with satisfaction.
